What’s the Difference Between Good and Bad Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a vital part of measuring your overall health. While seeking to avoid cholesterol altogether may be a good strategy for some, what some people don’t understand is that there is more than one type of cholesterol. Cholesterol is different than other substances because it can’t dissolve in the blood stream. It utilizes carriers, called lipoproteins, to transport it. When cholesterol is very high it can build up along the arterial walls, causing blockages. Some cholesterol is called good (or HDL), another type is called bad (or LDL), and then there are also triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol.

Good cholesterol, or High Density Lipoproteins (HDL), is vital to health. High levels of this is shown to prevent heart attack, and its believed that HDL is responsible for carrying cholesterol away from arteries and to the liver, its last stop before exiting the body. Experts think that HDL is also responsible for removing excess cholesterol from arterial walls. To increase HDL, eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids or take a fish oil supplement, use a lot of garlic, and eat more walnuts. Losing weight through a healthy diet is another way to assist your body in raising HDL levels. Add exercise to experience quick weight loss.

Bad cholesterol, also called Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL), is what you need to avoid. Too much of this in your blood can line your artery walls and combine with other substances to create plaque. The University of Pittsburgh conducted a study on exercise efficiency with overweight and sedentary adults between the ages of 60 and 75. They were broken into three groups: an exercise only group, a diet only group, and an exercise plus diet group. The goals were to determine which group would become more efficient at a particular exercise task at the end of four months, as well as if the body would burn calories from the fat stores or carbohydrate stores. Because quick weight loss was not the focus, one cannot determine from this study which group lost weight the fastest.

At the end of the four months, it was clear that the diet only group made the least amount of progress. Though they did lose weight and become more efficient at the exercise they chose, they also lost the most lean muscle mass out of any other group. Both the exercise only and exercise plus diet groups burned the highest amount of fat, clearly showing that exercise is vital in helping seniors lose weight.
This study clearly shows the importance of exercise. Many times people cut it out of their weight loss plan out of fear, but exercise allows the body to burn more fat and save the lean muscle that gets burned in older people from dieting alone. The chemical interleukin 6, a catalyst for inflammation and activator of white blood cells, was found to be elevated. Other chemicals include C-reactive protein, which was three times higher in obese people, and fibrinogen, which was 20% higher. Over time, the increased levels of these chemicals in the blood have a significant effect on the heart and its probability of failure. This is all the more reason why it’s important to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Beginning at the top, you are probably already familiar with what you find here as it is the same as any food label. You will see the serving size and amount of servings per container. This serves as a better indication of how economical the product is rather than its nutritional value. You will also see calories per serving underneath. Some include total calories, but this is not required.

The first list which begins with calories per serving will list fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins per serving, along with the percentage daily value for each.
